Paris Day 3

After going to sleep at 1am I wake up dark and early at 5.30 am.  WTF??? I try to go back to sleep but find it impossible so I get up and have my standard breakfast of fruit, yoghurt and a piece of toast and wash it down with a pink grapefruit juice.  Not exactly exciting but I like it.
The weather outside is really dreary, overcast and visibility is really poor.  Like a big fog has descended on the city.  I finish breakfast, shower and all that stuff ready to head to Versailles which is over an hr away by train.  It is still eerily quiet outside and looks freezing! Up until now the days have been sunny and around 16 degrees so I suppose I should not complain for November in Paris.
I have a look at the manual that Ana has left me in the apartment to see if there are any instructions on where the nearest RER train station is to get to Versailles.  As I am looking I get to a page that has some of Paris' Public Holidays and today is one of them! I get on the Chateau Versailles website to check if it is open today and all it says is it is open 7 days a week except for some public holidays.  No information on which public holidays it closes though.......mmmmm useful NOT!
I dont want to risk wasting that much of my day sitting for hrs on a train for nothing so I make a plan B and out I go into the FREEZING weather!
My first stop is an old Cemetary.  For those of you that know me I know you will be suprised I would actually do this considering I am pertified of ghosts.  It was actually a really peaceful place and was sort of beautiful in a weird way.  Nothing tried to reach out from a grave and grab my leg and I dont think any demon visited me last night to possess me, nor did my bedroom door move during the night like on paranormal activity so I think I have escaped untouched.  Phew!

Next I went to have a look at the famous Moulin Rouge.  Well that was a let down.  It is in this seedy, rough area of town and was nothing like I expected.  Maybe it looks better at night but I think I would be too scared to visit this area at night so I take a photo and leave.

I buy a Jamon baguette for lunch (my first lunch in Paris) and then I pass this gorgeous patisserie.  I so wish jamie was here so I could make him buy something just so I can bite it! I then think "c'mon you are in Paris, enjoy, experience, eat!!!"  I go inside and buy this 'looks too good to eat' raspberry tartlette. I then walk to Sacre de Coeur and eat my lunch at the base of the hill. I would have taken a photo of my lunch but I devoured it before I even had a chance to think about it.  This Basilica sits on a hill and is the highest point in Paris.  The day was horrible for me to capture the view from the top and normally you can go inside but it was not open probably due to the public holiday.

By this time I am literally Frozen.  I actually dressed appropriately but my fingers have gone numb and I can no longer take any photos as I seriously cannot feel anything in my fingers.  I need somewhere warm to visit so I decide to do to the Louvre.  Obviously worried I am going to get frost bite in my fingers I decide to WALK there instead of catching a train.  I know this sounds stupid but I seriously love the streets of Paris and I dont want to miss seeing as much as I can in the short time I am here.
I walk past some gorgeous little side streets.....

And pass a heap of cute and warm looking wine bars. I could definately visit one of these and warm up while having a Red Wine or two but kinda sad and boring on your own to be drinking in the middle of the day so I will leave thoses experiences for when I oneday return with Jamie xx
I reach the Louvre and line up outside in the massive line in the Freezing cold.  I finally get inside, buy my admission ticket and an expensive diet coke.  I am not really into museums and i prefer modern or contempory art but this place was still amazing.  The Louvre is massive and I kept getting lost.  I did not take a lot of photos as I really just wanted to walk and appreciate the place.  I stayed a lot longer than I expected and by the time I left the sun was starting to set.

I personally dont really see what all the fuss is about but I thought I would take a pic anyway.

The day is slipping away so I quickly walk to the Pont des Arts Bridge over the Seine.  The pedistrian bridge is covered in padlocks.  The story behind these love locks is that while you are strolling across the bridge in the most romantic city in the world your lover attaches a padlock, with both your names/initials on, to the bridge, locks it and throws the key into the Seine while confessing his undying love for you.  Awwww how sweet and romantic.  This would be the perfect picture moment when Jamie, deciding to suprise me, appears on the bridge and we race towards each other and passionately ...............yeah I know I'm dreaming :(

It is now getting late and although I assume Notre Dame will not be open I decide to still go anyway and take some photos of the outside.  This place is seriously beautiful and the bells start chiming while I am there as well.  After taking a few snaps I notice that there is a line out the front.   I go check it out and find out
I can go inside.  I line up and go inside where there is a service being held.  It is hard to describe how impressive this place is and the ceilings are soooo high.  I am not religous but I seriously felt like I was while I was inside Notre Dame.  I lit a candle and said some things that I suppose were silent prayers. It was definately the favourite part of my day.

I then go for a wander in the streets of the latin quarter where there are hundreds of restaurants and bars.

It suddenly hits me how cold and tired I am, so I decide to head back to the apartment and make some dinner and chill out with a red wine.  I get back to the apartment, change into jumper and tracky pants, pour a red and then crash before I can make any dinner.  I recork the bottle and shower hoping I might get a second wind but instead I go to bed and pass out with no dinner.  Hoping for a good night sleep and a chance to visit Versailles tomorrow.

  1. Great narrative, and the photos are terrific. The photos taken in the low light ie the lane and the cemetery would come up a bit brighter with a quick fix with Photoshop. The nighttime photos are very good. Not much more you could have done with the chanderlier and the candles without a remote flash, and a tripod. The night street scene is great.
You may have a future as a travel writer.

Looking forward to the next chapter.

    Love,
    Dad and Sandra. xxxxx
